Promoting Recovery and Resilience in Traumatized Youth
This workshop will explore the variety of ways that trauma impacts child development and cover some basic strategies that assist children and adolescents in overcoming traumatic backgrounds. A review of the common traumatic events of childhood covered in the ACE study (neglect, emotional, physical and sexual abuse, observing domestic violence, families affected by divorce, mental illness, and substance abuse) will be reviewed as well as some additional traumatic events such as chronic illness, and peer bullying. These adverse events affect a child’s views of himself and the world, trust in those around him, and healthy emotional regulation. A careful look at the impact of trauma reveals how simple interventions and a sensitive approach in interaction with children can mitigate the long-term outcome for children exposed to these adverse events. The workshop will emphasize how those interacting with traumatized children can help promote mastery experiences, encourage healthy reciprocal relationships, develop emotional regulation skills, and teach attributions that free them from self-blame, to overcome the long-term effects of traumatic experiences. Case examples and group-based exercises will supplement didactic material. The importance of balancing validation with realistic expectation will be emphasized.
