UPCC schedules release of Kids County in Michigan Data Book
Confirmed cases of U.P. child abuse, neglect rise dramatically
January 6, 2009
MARQUETTE – Preliminary information in the Kids Count in Michigan Data Book will reveal a startling increase in confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect in the Upper Peninsula.
The Upper Peninsula Children’s Coalition will hold a press conference and public data release of the Kids Count in Michigan Data Book on January 13 at 8 am at the Marquette Alger Regional Educational Service Agency office, 321 East Ohio St., Marquette. Until that time, complete details of the data book cannot be made public.
Six local experts who work with children and families across the Upper Peninsula will share examples of what is working to treat or prevent child abuse and neglect in our communities during the data release.
In addition, the UPCC is preparing its annual “Coming Together for Kids” conference on April 24. This year’s featured speaker will be Robert Anda, MD, who was one of the principal researchers on the “Adverse Childhood Experiences” (ACE) study. The ACE study assessed a wide array of traumatic childhood experiences as well as many health and social problems from adolescence to late adulthood. It showed that people who had experienced traumatic events such as abuse and neglect as children were much more likely to have serious medical and social problems as adults. Dr. Anda’s presentation is titled, “The Health and Social Impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences Throughout the Lifespan.”
“The Michigan Nonprofit Association recently surveyed organizations across Michigan to find out what they anticipate 2009 will be like,” said Paul Olson, UPCC chair. “Nearly 80 percent of those surveyed anticipated an increased demand for the services they provide. At the same time, more than half of those surveyed anticipated their funding would decrease over the next year. Coupled with the statistics coming out of the Kids Count in Michigan Data Book, we see that it has never been more important for youth-serving nonprofit organizations to improve collaborations, increase efficiency, and put a renewed emphasis on preventing childhood trauma.”
The UPCC Press Conference on will be open to the general public. For more information about UPCC or the Kid’s Count in Michigan Data Book contact Paul Olson at 906-228-8919 ext. 29 or Cookie Aho at 906-360-7118
